Retirement Security for US Nationals Held Hostage or Wrongfully Detained.

This law ensures that time spent in captivity or wrongful detention abroad does not reduce future Social Security retirement benefits. For individuals who were hostages, this period will be treated as time worked, accruing "deemed wages." This protects the retirement rights of US citizens affected by unlawful detention.
Key points
Individuals unlawfully detained or held hostage abroad will have that period credited toward their Social Security work history.
For each month of captivity, "deemed wages" based on the national average wage index will be credited, potentially increasing or enabling eligibility for retirement benefits.
To qualify, an application must be submitted along with federal documentation confirming the status as a hostage or wrongfully detained individual.
