Delaying new dog import rules for military, diplomats, and service animals.

This Act delays the application of strict new dog import rules by 18 months for military members, diplomats, and their families returning from abroad, as well as for individuals importing service animals from low-risk rabies countries. Furthermore, it mandates the CDC to quickly revise its regulations to allow the import of dogs of any age and non-microchipped dogs born before the Act's enactment, simplifying the process of bringing pets home.
Key points
Delay: Strict new dog import rules (published May 2024) will not apply for 18 months to covered individuals (military, diplomatic personnel, and their families) returning from foreign postings.
Service Animals: Individuals importing service animals from low-risk rabies countries also benefit from the 18-month delay in new import requirements.
Rule Revision: The CDC must revise regulations within 10 days to allow the import of dogs of any age and non-microchipped dogs (born before this Act) from low-risk rabies countries.
