Medicare Payment Rules Changed for Upgraded Manual Wheelchairs.

This act modifies Medicare payment rules, allowing beneficiaries needing ultralightweight manual wheelchairs to choose more expensive titanium or carbon fiber models. Citizens can purchase or rent these upgraded wheelchairs, but they must pay the difference between the standard Medicare fee and the fair market value of the upgraded equipment. Suppliers are required to inform patients about this potential out-of-pocket cost beforehand.
Key points
Medicare must establish separate billing codes for ultralightweight manual wheelchairs based on construction material (titanium or carbon fiber vs. others).
Medicare beneficiaries gain the option to purchase or rent upgraded titanium or carbon fiber wheelchairs starting January 1, 2025.
The individual is responsible for paying the cost difference between the standard Medicare rate and the fair market value of the upgraded wheelchair.
Suppliers must issue an advance notice to inform beneficiaries of their potential financial liability.
