Equalizing Federal Sentences for Cocaine Offenses (EQUAL Act).

This law eliminates the disparity in federal sentencing between offenses involving powder cocaine and crack cocaine (cocaine base). Citizens convicted of crack cocaine offenses will no longer face significantly harsher sentences than those convicted for the same quantity of powder cocaine. The changes apply to all future sentences and allow courts to review and potentially reduce sentences for individuals already convicted under the old, unequal rules.
Key points
Sentence equalization: Ends harsher federal penalties for crack cocaine possession or distribution compared to powder cocaine.
Retroactive review: Federal courts gain the authority to reconsider and potentially reduce sentences for individuals previously convicted of cocaine base offenses.
The new, equalized sentencing rules apply immediately to all future convictions.
