Wildfire Intelligence Center: Improving Prediction and Response to Wildland Fires
This Act establishes a joint Wildfire Intelligence Center (WIC) to significantly improve coordination and the use of science in managing wildfires across the US. Citizens will benefit from more accurate fire risk forecasts, better evacuation planning, and faster emergency response, directly enhancing the safety of their homes and health. The Center is tasked with providing real-time, data-rich services to inform land management, community risk reduction, and public health protection from smoke impacts.
Key points
Establishment of the Wildfire Intelligence Center (WIC) as a joint office across the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, and the Interior to integrate wildfire data and science.
Enhanced Prediction and Decision Support: The Center will provide real-time, science-based analytical services and comprehensive modeling of fire behavior, including spread into built environments.
Increased Public Safety: Functions include creating a nationwide wildland fire risk catalog, assisting with evacuation plans for at-risk communities, and consolidating air quality data related to smoke impacts.
Improved Interoperability: WIC must establish an interoperable IT infrastructure and common data standards to facilitate rapid information sharing among Federal, State, Tribal, and local entities.
