Commemorative Coins for Sultana Steamboat Disaster: Funding a History Museum.
This law authorizes the minting of commemorative coins (gold, silver, and clad half-dollar) to honor the victims of the 1865 Sultana steamboat explosion, the worst maritime disaster in US history. Citizens who purchase these collectible coins will directly support the Sultana Historical Preservation Society, as surcharges from sales will fund the construction and operation of a dedicated museum. The program is designed to operate at no net cost to the taxpayer.
Key points
New collectible coins ($5, $1, and half-dollar denominations) will be issued to memorialize the Sultana disaster victims.
A surcharge added to the sale price of each coin will be dedicated to funding the establishment and maintenance of the Sultana Disaster Museum.
The entire coin program must be financially self-sufficient, ensuring no net cost to the US Government or taxpayers.
