Genetic testing and preventive surgeries for hereditary cancer under Medicare coverage.
This Act expands Medicare coverage to include essential services for individuals at risk of hereditary cancer. Citizens with a family history of hereditary cancer gene mutations or personal suspicions will gain access to covered genetic testing. Furthermore, the coverage will include risk-reducing surgeries and more frequent screenings, aiming for early detection or prevention of cancer development.
Key points
Genetic Testing Coverage: Medicare will cover germline mutation testing for individuals with a personal or family history of a hereditary cancer gene mutation or a history suspicious for hereditary cancer.
Preventive Surgeries: Risk-reducing surgeries recommended by clinical guidelines will be covered as necessary treatment for illness, reducing the risk of developing cancer for high-risk individuals.
Increased Screening Frequency: Individuals with a confirmed hereditary cancer gene mutation will receive more frequent evidence-based screenings (e.g., mammography, colonoscopy, breast MRI), in compliance with clinical guidelines, but no less often than annually.
