Alpha-gal: New Food Labeling Rules for Allergies

This act aims to improve food safety for individuals with alpha-gal allergy by adding this substance to the list of major food allergens. This will require food manufacturers to clearly label the presence of alpha-gal on product labels, helping consumers make informed choices and avoid allergic reactions. The changes will take effect 18 months after the act is passed.
Key points
Alpha-gal (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose) will be recognized as a major food allergen, requiring its labeling on product packaging.
This includes ingredients derived from non-catarrhine primate mammals and red algae in the order Gigartinales.
Exceptions apply to mammal-derived ingredients where alpha-gal is below a detectable limit.
The regulations will become effective 18 months after the act's enactment, allowing manufacturers time to comply.
