Monthly Payments for Families and Pregnant Women: Replacing the Child Tax Credit
This Act establishes a new system of monthly payments for eligible pregnant women (starting at 20 weeks) and caregivers of children under 18, replacing the existing federal Child Tax Credit. The goal is to enhance families' ability to provide for their members. Payment amounts vary based on the child's age and marital status, and benefits are phased out for higher-income families.
Key points
New monthly benefits: $800 for pregnant women (starting at 20 weeks); $400 per child under 6; $250 per child aged 6-17.
A 20% increase in total payment amount is provided for beneficiaries who are married.
Benefits are phased out (reduced) when adjusted gross income exceeds $125,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly.
The Act completely repeals the current federal Child Tax Credit and related tax provisions.
Payments will be administered by the Commissioner of Social Security, and a Bureau of Family Statistics will be established within the SSA.
