No Asylum for Convicted Criminals Act of 2025

This new law aims to prevent individuals convicted of crimes, whether felonies or misdemeanors, from being eligible for asylum in the United States. This means that if someone has a criminal conviction, their asylum application will be denied, unless the crime was a political offense committed outside the U.S.
Key points
Individuals convicted of felonies or misdemeanors will be ineligible for asylum in the U.S.
An exception may apply for political offenses committed outside the United States, as designated by the Secretary of Homeland Security.
The law defines "felony" and "misdemeanor" based on relevant jurisdiction (Federal, State, tribal, or local) or potential imprisonment time.
