Support for ALS Veterans' Families: New Benefits Rules

This act expands financial support for surviving spouses of veterans who died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), regardless of how long the veteran had the disease. This means more veteran families will receive assistance, potentially improving their financial situation after losing a loved one. The act also mandates a review of other high-mortality conditions to consider similar future support.
Key points
Surviving spouses of veterans who died from ALS will receive increased benefits, regardless of the disease's duration.
To qualify, the marriage must have lasted for at least eight continuous years.
These changes apply to veterans who die from ALS on or after October 1, 2025.
The government will study other service-connected disabilities with high mortality rates to assess the need for similar support.
