Federal Trial Location Change: Right to a Court Closer to Home.

This law modifies where federal criminal trials take place for offenses committed on Federal Government property within the Washington D.C. area (National Capital Region). Instead of the trial automatically being held in D.C., the accused will generally have the right to move the case to the court district where they permanently reside. This aims to ensure citizens charged with these specific federal crimes can face trial closer to their homes.
Key points
Individuals charged with federal offenses committed on federal property in the D.C. region (NCR) gain the right to transfer their trial to their home district court.
The change applies only to crimes committed on federally controlled property (excluding USPS) and affects cases where the trial has not yet been scheduled.
Defendants who are not permanent residents (domiciled) in the United States cannot request this transfer.
