Easing Natural Gas Export and Import Restrictions

This act aims to remove restrictions on the export and import of natural gas, including liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will have exclusive authority to approve or deny applications for LNG terminals, deeming such activities consistent with the public interest. These changes could impact gas availability and prices, as well as the development of energy infrastructure in the U.S.
Key points
Eliminates existing restrictions on international natural gas trade.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) gains exclusive authority over approving LNG terminal projects, considering them in the public interest.
The U.S. President retains the power to prohibit imports or exports in emergencies or against state sponsors of terrorism.
