Protecting Postal Services: More Time for Decisions, Fewer Closures.

This act introduces new rules for closing and consolidating post offices and distribution centers, giving citizens more time to voice their opinions and making it harder to shut down certain facilities. The goal is to ensure stable postal services and better access, especially in smaller towns and remote areas.
Key points
Extends the public consultation period before a post office closure or consolidation to 180 days after the public hearing summary is published.
Mandates public hearings (in-person or virtual) before any post office closure, with a summary of comments and public support/opposition published.
Prohibits closing post offices that are the only ones within 15 miles or serve a population of 15,000 or more.
Restricts the closure of mail processing and distribution centers, especially in areas not meeting on-time delivery benchmarks.
Halts changes to mail processing facility operations until an advisory opinion is issued by the independent Postal Regulatory Commission.
Prevents changes to mail pickup and drop-off schedules that would decrease service frequency without an opinion from the independent commission.
