Protecting Dialysis Patients: Ending Insurance Discrimination

This act aims to ensure private health plans do not discriminate against individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or treat dialysis worse than other medical services. It seeks to prevent health insurers from shifting the primary cost of dialysis treatment to the Medicare program, protecting patients from unfair practices. Citizens with ESRD will gain assurance that their health insurance will cover dialysis equally with other benefits.
Key points
Private insurers cannot discriminate against patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
Dialysis must be treated equally to other medical services in insurance plans.
Insurers cannot shift primary dialysis treatment costs to the Medicare program.
Health plans can still choose which dialysis providers are in their network.
