Clergy Social Security Opt-In Opportunity

The Clergy Act allows clergy members, religious order members, and Christian Science practitioners who previously opted out of Social Security coverage to rejoin the system. This enables them to become eligible for retirement and other benefits provided by Social Security. They have until the due date of their second taxable year's income tax return after 2027 to apply.
Key points
Clergy can now opt back into Social Security coverage, even if they previously opted out.
The deadline to apply for re-entry is the tax return due date for the applicant's second taxable year beginning after December 31, 2027.
Once re-entered, individuals cannot opt out of Social Security coverage again.
Late applications may require payment of past due taxes for the effective taxable year.
