Shorter Probationary Periods for New Federal Employees

This act reduces the probationary period for individuals starting federal employment. Instead of a longer period, most new employees will have a probationary period of 6 or 12 months, depending on their prior civil service experience. This aims to allow new federal workers to gain full employee protections more quickly.
Key points
Probationary periods for new federal employees will be shortened to 6 months if they previously held a position in the executive branch civil service.
For other new federal employees, the probationary period will be 12 months.
These changes apply to various types of federal employment, including competitive service, excepted service, and the Senior Executive Service.
