Major Immigration Reform: Points System, Diversity Visa Elimination, and Family Limits
This Act fundamentally restructures the immigration system, replacing existing pathways with a points-based system prioritizing skills, age, and high salaries. US citizens and permanent residents will lose the ability to sponsor parents, adult children, and siblings for permanent residency, significantly restricting family reunification. Additionally, the Diversity Visa lottery is eliminated, and the annual refugee admission limit is capped at 50,000.
Key points
Family Sponsorship Restricted: US citizens can no longer sponsor parents, adult children, or siblings for permanent residency. A new temporary visa (W) is created for parents, but they cannot work or receive public benefits.
Skills-Based Immigration: A new points system requires applicants to score at least 30 points based on education (STEM favored), English proficiency, age, and high salary job offers.
Diversity Visa Ended: The popular Diversity Visa lottery program is completely eliminated, closing a pathway for immigrants from underrepresented countries.
Refugee Cap: The maximum number of refugees admitted annually is fixed at 50,000.
H-1B Visas: Priority for H-1B skilled worker visas will be determined by the compensation rate offered, favoring higher-paying jobs.
