Support for Future School Psychologists: Grant Program and Service Obligation
This act establishes a grant program for students who commit to working as school psychologists in underserved schools. The goal is to increase access to psychological support for students, potentially improving their well-being and academic performance. Students will receive financial aid, but in return, they must fulfill a service obligation in schools.
Key points
Psychology students can receive up to $16,000 in financial aid for their studies if they commit to working as a school psychologist.
After graduation, recipients must work for at least 4 years within 8 years in public or non-profit private schools with a shortage of psychologists.
If a recipient fails to fulfill the service obligation, the received funds will be treated as a student loan, which must be repaid with interest.
The act allows for reconsideration of decisions to convert the grant to a loan if the service obligation is proven to be met or in cases of extenuating circumstances.
