New Rules for Firearm Marking and Dealer Inventory Checks

This act introduces new requirements for marking firearms with additional, hidden serial numbers to facilitate tracking. It also broadens the definition of firearm parts considered as firearms. Furthermore, licensed firearm dealers will be required to regularly check their inventory, and criminal background check records will be retained longer.
Key points
Firearms manufactured in the U.S. will need an additional, hidden serial number, visible, for example, in infrared light, to aid identification.
The definition of "firearm" will expand to include unfinished parts that can be easily assembled into a functional firearm, making illegal manufacturing more difficult.
Licensed firearm dealers will be required to conduct physical checks of their inventory, increasing oversight of firearm sales.
Records from instant criminal background checks for firearm purchases will be preserved for 180 days, instead of being immediately destroyed.
