Recognition and Compensation for Unrecognized Alaska Native Communities
This act aims to correct a historical oversight by granting five previously unrecognized Alaska Native communities the right to form their own corporations and receive land. This will empower residents of these communities to control their resources, foster economic development, and preserve their cultural heritage.
Key points
Five Alaska Native communities (Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, Wrangell) will be recognized and allowed to form Urban Corporations.
Each corporation will receive approximately 23,040 acres of federal land as compensation for past omissions from settlement acts.
Eligible Native individuals from these communities will become shareholders in the new corporations, gaining a stake in resource management and profits.
The conveyed lands will remain open for public recreational uses like hunting and fishing, subject to reasonable restrictions.
New corporations can establish settlement trusts to support the health, education, and welfare of their members, and preserve Native heritage.
