Biochar Research: Supporting Agriculture and Environment

This act establishes a national biochar research network to help farmers and foresters better utilize this substance. The goal is to increase crop yields, improve soil health, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, potentially leading to higher profits and more resilient crops.
Key points
Up to 20 biochar research sites will be established across the U.S. to test various biochar types under different soil and climatic conditions.
Research will focus on how biochar impacts soil carbon sequestration, crop production, resilience to extreme weather, and ecosystem health.
Research findings will be made available to farmers, foresters, and other land managers to guide sustainable biochar production and application.
The act authorizes $50 million annually for fiscal years 2026-2030 to fund this research.
