Preventing Escalation and Advancing Caucasus Engagement Act
This act aims to promote peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan by imposing sanctions on Azerbaijan in case of aggression. U.S. citizens might indirectly feel the effects if their businesses have financial ties with sanctioned entities, though trade in food and medicine is exempt. The goal is to stabilize the region and protect the sovereign rights of nations.
Key points
Imposition of financial and visa sanctions on Azerbaijani officials and entities responsible for hostile actions against Armenia.
Prohibition on opening or maintaining correspondent accounts for foreign financial institutions that facilitate trade in Azerbaijani petroleum, with exceptions for agricultural commodities, food, medicine, and medical devices.
Sanctions can be waived or terminated if Azerbaijan ceases hostile actions and sanctioned individuals take verifiable steps to end their participation in aggression.
The act supports the sovereignty of Armenia and Azerbaijan, direct peace negotiations, and aims to reduce Russian influence in Armenia.
