Stricter Federal Penalties for Vandalism and Assaults on Public Transit.

This Act establishes new federal crimes and significantly increases penalties for vandalism, graffiti, and assaults against passengers and workers on mass transportation systems. Citizens should see improved safety and cleaner facilities, as offenders are now required to pay the full cost of repairs. Simple assault on transit now carries a minimum sentence of 5 years in prison.
Key points
Vandalism and graffiti against public transit property become federal offenses, punishable by up to 5 years in prison (up to 10 years for major damage or repeat offenses).
Mandatory restitution: Offenders must pay the full cost of repairing, cleaning up, or replacing damaged transit property.
Assaulting a passenger or transit worker (driver, security) carries a minimum sentence of 5 years, increasing to a minimum of 15 years if a dangerous weapon is used or serious injury occurs.
