Doubling Cleanup Funds for Contaminated Land (Brownfields Reauthorization)
This law significantly increases federal funding dedicated to cleaning up and revitalizing contaminated industrial sites, known as “brownfields.” This change allows local communities to receive larger grants to remove environmental hazards and transform these areas into safe spaces for housing or development. The increased funding and grant limits are set for the fiscal years 2026 through 2030, improving neighborhood safety and quality of life.
Key points
The maximum grant amount for cleaning up a single site is doubled, increasing from $500,000 to $1,000,000.
Annual funding for the brownfields revitalization program is increased from $200 million to $250 million for the years 2026–2030.
States gain greater flexibility to use federal funds to implement and run their own environmental cleanup programs.
