Housing to Homes Act: Furniture for Homeless and Newly Housed Families
This Act expands the federal homeless assistance program, allowing funds to be used for purchasing household furnishings for those transitioning out of homelessness. This means individuals and families moving into permanent housing can receive essential furniture at little to no cost. The goal is to promote stability and reduce the likelihood of returning to homelessness due to a lack of basic household goods.
Key points
New funding for furniture: The Continuum of Care Program can now pay furniture banks for the costs of providing, delivering, installing, and assembling household furnishings for homeless individuals and families.
Support for newly housed: Assistance is available for currently homeless individuals, those who were homeless in the prior six months and are now in permanent housing, and those in permanent supportive housing.
Furniture ownership: Any household furnishings provided become the sole property of the individual or family receiving them.
Reporting on furniture poverty: The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) must report annually on furniture poverty in the U.S. and the impact of this program on the issue.
Temporary measure: The provisions and amendments introduced by this Act are set to be repealed 5 years after enactment.
