Military Operations and Endangered Species: New Rules for Defense Lands

This act changes how endangered species are protected on military lands. It means certain military areas will no longer be designated as critical habitats, and defense operations will have more flexibility, even if they impact endangered species. The goal is to streamline military activities without needing approval for actions that might harm animals or plants.
Key points
Military installations and National Guard facilities will not be designated as critical habitats for endangered species.
The Secretary of Defense can exclude other areas from protection if deemed necessary for military purposes, like training or weapons testing.
Military personnel, including contractors, will be exempt from prohibitions on harming endangered species during national defense-related operations.
The Secretary of Defense will not need to consult with the Secretary of the Interior regarding military actions, even if they involve areas with natural resource management plans.
