Higher Federal Loan Limits for Graduate and Professional Students.

This law increases the maximum amounts of Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans available to students pursuing graduate and professional degrees. Starting July 1, 2026, these students can borrow more money annually and overall, potentially easing the financing of expensive programs but also increasing their total debt burden. The changes aim to standardize access to funding for all advanced students.
Key points
The annual limit for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans for graduate and professional students will increase to $50,000, effective July 1, 2026.
The aggregate limit for these loans (in addition to undergraduate borrowing) will be set at $200,000.
