New Tax Credit for Home Energy Costs: Relief for Households.
This act introduces a new refundable tax credit designed to help citizens cover the costs of electricity, natural gas, or propane when prices significantly increase. The credit aims to ease the financial burden of high utility bills for individuals in their primary residences.
Key points
A new tax credit for your home's electricity, natural gas, or propane bills for your principal residence.
The maximum credit is $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for joint filers and heads of household.
This credit will only be available in years when average energy prices rise by more than 2% compared to the previous year.
The credit amount will be gradually reduced for higher-income individuals (e.g., above $75,000 for single filers, $150,000 for joint filers).
Receiving this credit will not affect your eligibility for other energy assistance or means-tested social programs.
It applies to energy bills for your main home, whether you own or rent.
These changes will take effect for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025.
