Expanding Food Aid for Households Receiving Energy Assistance.

This Act aims to increase Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for low-income households that also receive federal or state energy assistance. The changes make it easier for these households to qualify for a higher utility deduction, directly resulting in increased food aid. Furthermore, state energy bill payments made on behalf of a household will be treated as if the household paid them directly, helping maximize their SNAP benefits.
Key points
Expands eligibility for the higher Standard Utility Allowance (SUA) when calculating SNAP benefits for recipients of energy assistance programs.
Households qualify for the higher utility deduction if they received energy aid (over $20 annually) within the last 12 months.
State payments covering utility bills will be counted as the household's own expenses, potentially increasing the amount of food assistance received.
