Enhanced Road Safety: Requirements for Automatic Emergency Braking Systems.

This Act directs the Secretary of Transportation to initiate a rulemaking process to amend regulations regarding Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems in passenger motor vehicles. The amended rules aim to ensure these systems function in low light conditions and detect a wider range of "vulnerable road users," including cyclists and motorcyclists, regardless of skin color or clothing.
Key points
The Secretary must initiate a rulemaking process to ensure AEB systems in passenger vehicles detect and respond to pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and individuals in wheelchairs.
These systems must function in daylight and low light conditions and across the entire speed range specified for pedestrian emergency braking.
The compliance date for the revised rule shall be not later than 2 years after the final revised rule is issued.
