Retirement Savings Access for Unpaid Family Caregivers (Roth IRA)

This bill allows unpaid family caregivers to contribute to a Roth IRA retirement account even if they have little to no earned income. It helps those caring for relatives build financial security for their own retirement while performing essential caregiving duties.
Key points
Caregivers providing 500 or more hours of care per year can contribute to a Roth IRA.
The benefit applies to individuals with fewer than 500 hours of paid employment or self-employment annually.
Eligible care includes looking after children, seniors, or adults with special needs and age-related conditions.
Caregiving tasks include assistance with grooming, meal preparation, housekeeping, medication management, and mobility.
The new rules are set to take effect for tax years beginning after December 31, 2026.
