Mandatory Disclosure of Cameras and Microphones in Smart Devices

New legislation requires manufacturers to clearly disclose built-in cameras or microphones in internet-connected devices before purchase. This aims to increase your awareness and control over privacy in your daily life, helping you make informed purchasing decisions.
Key points
Manufacturers must clearly disclose the presence of cameras or microphones in smart devices prior to sale.
The Act applies to internet-connected consumer products, excluding phones, laptops, tablets, or devices where a camera/microphone is reasonably expected.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will enforce these rules and issue guidance for manufacturers.
The provisions will take effect 180 days after the FTC issues its guidance and will apply to devices manufactured after that date.
