Last Acre Program: High-Speed Internet for Farmers and Precision Agriculture
This act introduces a new program aimed at providing high-speed internet access to rural agricultural areas, especially where it is currently lacking. This will enable farmers to utilize modern technologies, potentially improving their work efficiency and reducing costs. The program offers grants and loans to internet providers, prioritizing the most underserved areas.
Key points
The new "Last Acre Program" will provide high-speed internet (min. 100/20 Mbps) to unserved or underserved agricultural lands.
Farmers will be able to use the internet for precision agriculture, such as managing crops, livestock, irrigation systems, and drones.
Internet providers can receive grants and loans for infrastructure construction, covering up to 80% of costs, and up to 90% for limited resource farmers.
The act requires internet providers to ensure cybersecurity and regularly report on network buildout progress.
Data on internet usage in agriculture will be collected to better plan future investments.
