Free Diabetes Self-Management Training and Virtual Care Testing for Medicare.

This legislation aims to significantly improve access to diabetes self-management training (DSMT) for Medicare beneficiaries. The most impactful change is the elimination of all cost-sharing (copayments and deductibles) for these services, making the training free for patients. Additionally, the bill increases the guaranteed number of training hours and mandates the testing of virtual, web-based educational programs.
Key points
Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) will be 100% covered by Medicare, eliminating patient out-of-pocket costs and deductibles.
Beneficiaries are guaranteed 10 initial hours of training, plus 2 additional hours annually thereafter.
A pilot program will test the effectiveness of virtual (online) diabetes training to improve accessibility and health outcomes.
