Consumer Protection: Easier Subscription and Free Trial Cancellations

This act aims to make it easier for citizens to cancel automatically renewing services and subscriptions, as well as free trials that convert to paid services. Companies will be required to clearly disclose renewal terms and provide simple cancellation methods, protecting consumers from unwanted charges.
Key points
Companies must clearly disclose automatic renewal terms and cancellation procedures in contracts.
Before the first and each subsequent automatic renewal, companies must notify you at least 7 days in advance and obtain your consent.
If you haven't used a service for 6 consecutive months, the company must re-obtain your consent for renewal and inform you of your right to a prorated refund.
Free trials: companies must notify you at least 7 days before the free trial ends and obtain your consent for charges.
Cancelling a service must be as easy as signing up for it, including an online cancellation mechanism.
Contracts violating these rules will be void, and consumers will receive a refund for all amounts paid due to such violation.
Consent obtained through "dark patterns" (manipulative interfaces) will not be considered valid.
