Alaska Native Land Equity Act: Land and Rights for Five Communities

This act aims to correct a historical oversight by granting five previously excluded Alaska Native communities the right to form their own corporations and receive land. This will support their economic development and cultural preservation. The act also ensures that existing distribution rights for these residents are maintained.
Key points
Five Alaska Native communities (Haines, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Tenakee, Wrangell) will gain the right to form their own corporations and receive land.
Each of these corporations will receive approximately 23,040 acres of land to support their development and self-sufficiency.
Residents of these communities who become shareholders in the new corporations will continue to receive distributions from the Regional Corporation for Southeast Alaska.
Land conveyed to the corporations will remain open for public recreational use, including hunting and fishing, with certain restrictions for safety and resource protection.
The act allows for the establishment of settlement trusts, with proceeds supporting the health, education, and welfare of beneficiaries, and preserving Native heritage.
