Protecting Farmworkers from Wildfire Smoke and Excessive Heat
This new law aims to protect farmworkers from harmful wildfire smoke and extreme heat. It mandates employers to provide protective equipment, breaks, and training to improve the safety and health of agricultural workers.
Key points
Agricultural employers must provide N95/N100 masks or similar when air quality is dangerous due to wildfire smoke.
Agricultural employers must provide water and cooling facilities when heat reaches dangerous levels.
Under extremely dangerous conditions (smoke or heat), farmworkers must use protective equipment and receive mandatory 10-minute breaks every 2 hours in safe areas.
Farmworkers will receive training in an understandable language on equipment use and health risks.
