Faster Payments for Medicare Advantage Providers

New rules aim to speed up payments to doctors and hospitals providing services under Medicare Advantage plans. This means providers will receive money faster, potentially improving healthcare access and reducing administrative burdens. Financial penalties will be imposed on Medicare Advantage organizations for payment delays.
Key points
Medicare Advantage organizations must pay at least 95% of "clean claims" within 14 days (electronic) or 30 days (paper).
Interest will be applied to late payments made by Medicare Advantage organizations to providers.
The Secretary of Health can impose civil money penalties of up to $25,000 for each prompt payment violation.
Medicare Advantage organizations will be required to report data on payment timeliness, increasing transparency.
These changes will apply to services furnished on or after January 1, 2027.
