Veterans Healthcare Quality: Ensuring Neutral Peer Review and Accountability.

This law establishes new rules to guarantee impartiality in the quality review process for medical care provided at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities. It aims to prevent conflicts of interest where providers review their own cases or the cases of close colleagues, thereby increasing patient safety and trust in the system. Veterans benefit from knowing that quality issues will be assessed by objective, independent teams.
Key points
Healthcare providers must withdraw from quality reviews if they were directly involved in the care being assessed or cannot be impartial.
Reviews of a provider who is also on the local review committee must be finalized by a neutral peer review committee at a different VHA facility.
