Easier Home Detention and Compassionate Release for Elderly and Ill Inmates

This act makes it easier for elderly and terminally ill inmates to apply for home detention or compassionate release by speeding up court review. It also extends the Elderly Home Detention Pilot Program until 2029 and adjusts eligibility criteria, potentially allowing more individuals to qualify.
Key points
Courts can now review requests for home detention for elderly or terminally ill inmates more quickly if the Bureau of Prisons doesn't act within 30 days.
More inmates may qualify for home detention as the required time served is reduced from 2/3 to 1/2 of their sentence, including earned credits.
The home detention program for elderly, nonviolent offenders is extended until 2029, providing more time for eligible individuals to benefit.
The process for compassionate release is streamlined, especially for older cases, allowing courts to intervene sooner if the prison system delays.
