Lithium-Ion Battery Safety: New Standards for Electric Vehicles.

The Act requires the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to promulgate ANSI/CAN/UL standards (2271, 2849, 2272) as mandatory consumer product safety standards for batteries in light electric vehicles and e-bikes within 180 days. It also requires the CPSC to submit a report to Congress within 5 years regarding fires and explosions associated with these products.
Key points
Standards Requirement: The CPSC must adopt UL 2271, UL 2849, and UL 2272 as final consumer product safety standards.
Standard Revisions: Revised voluntary standards become mandatory automatically unless the CPSC determines they do not improve safety.
Hazard Reporting: The CPSC is required to submit a report on fires and explosions, including information on the battery manufacturer and compliance with standards.
