Better Weather and Flood Forecasts: Supporting Agriculture and Safety

This Act aims to improve forecasts for weather, drought, fire, and floods by maintaining and expanding the National Mesonet Program. This means faster and more accurate warnings about extreme weather events, directly enhancing personal safety, protecting property, and supporting agriculture and food security. The program will increase the density of weather data, including soil moisture and road conditions, helping citizens and businesses make better daily decisions.
Key points
Faster Weather Warnings: The goal is to achieve a 30-minute warning time for severe weather, providing more time for citizens to react and seek protection.
Agricultural Support: Collecting soil and vegetation moisture data will help farmers manage crops and mitigate the effects of drought.
Road Safety: Expanding environmental monitoring networks in the roadway environment will provide real-time road weather and surface conditions for safer travel.
Grants for Equipment: The program allocates financial assistance (at least 15% of the budget) to states, tribes, academia, and private entities to build or upgrade weather monitoring systems (mesonet).
