Medicaid Eligibility Verification: New State Requirements

New rules require states to regularly check if individuals receiving medical assistance (Medicaid) are still alive, using a national death database. This aims to prevent payments to deceased individuals. If an error occurs and someone is wrongly removed, they will be immediately reinstated.
Key points
States must quarterly check Medicaid beneficiaries against the national Death Master File.
Individuals identified as deceased will be disenrolled from Medicaid, and payments on their behalf will cease.
In case of error and wrongful disenrollment, individuals will be immediately reinstated to the program retroactively.
