Improved Healthcare for Sickle Cell Disease Patients
This act aims to enhance access to comprehensive healthcare for individuals with sickle cell disease. Starting in 2026, Medicaid programs will be able to offer specialized health services, including dental and vision care, for these patients. This is intended to improve their daily lives and overall quality of care.
Key points
Beginning January 1, 2026, Medicaid programs can establish specialized "health homes" focused on comprehensive care for individuals with sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease patients enrolled in these programs will receive access to dental and vision services, regardless of other Medicaid rules.
States implementing these changes will be required to report on healthcare quality, access, and expenditures to assess program effectiveness.
By June 30, 2026, best practices for designing and implementing sickle cell disease-focused care will be made public.
