Support for Retired Officers: New Death Benefits

This act expands the public safety officers' death benefits program to include retired law enforcement officers. This means that families of retired police officers who died or became permanently disabled due to a targeted attack related to their service may receive financial support. These changes also apply to incidents that occurred on or after January 1, 2012.
Key points
Retired law enforcement officers are now eligible for death benefits if their death or permanent disability results from a targeted attack related to their prior service.
The program covers individuals who separated from service in good standing, regardless of whether they received compensation.
The provisions are retroactive, covering incidents from January 1, 2012, which may benefit families of those affected in the past.
